UNBA held a workshop on reviewing the Recommendations for lawyers undertaking pro bono work.

The workshop brought together the Head of UNBA Committee on Legal Aid Serhii Vylkov, the Director of Coordination Centre for Legal Aid Olexii Boniuk, the Director of Ukrainian Legal Aid Foundation Mykola Sioma, the Head of the UNBA Secretariat Vadym Krasnyk and the Head of Kharkiv Region Bar Council Viktoria Gaivoronska.

The purposes of the meeting were to approve the content of the Guidance, to define a pro bono definition, to identify the features of the case, which may and may not be taken on pro bono basis, as well as the formation of the institutional framework for such work, including the pro bono exchange and the regional coordinator.

The workshop itself is a follow-up to cooperation of UNBA with legal aid centers and public sector aiming to secure the role of the Bar and contribute to the access to justice for all the social groups.

Serhii Vylkov noted that in the result of discussion pro bono was defined as voluntary legal aid assistance which is provided by an advocate free of charge for the purpose to restore social justice in the interests of the rule of law.

The Recommendations will soon be developed and submitted to the Bar Council of Ukraine for consideration.
