International Forum of Justice – results of monitoring the courts’ work |
|
On 14 December 2015 Mrs Ganna Kolesnyk, Head of the UNBA Human Rights Committee, participated in the first International Forum of Justice held at the initiative of the "Open court" in partnership with the Supreme Court of Ukraine and the Western NIS Enterprise Fund (WNISEF) The event was dedicated to summarizing the most grand-scale monitoring of courts of Ukraine, in which the UNBA representatives and advocates also took place. The forum was attended by the heads of higher, appellate and district courts, representatives of leading international law firms, recognized experts in law, managers of higher education institutions, researchers and the public. In his speech, Mr Yaroslav Romanyuk, President of the Supreme Court of Ukraine, said: "Today, there is a particularly urgent need in promoting effective dialogue between the public and the courts. The ability to communicate is a necessary condition for the operation both of a separate court and every judge who works in it”. During the Forum there was a demonstration of a video material from courtrooms which showed positive and negative examples of administration of justice in Ukraine, with highlighting the critical behavior of judges and prosecutors, which meets or does not meet the standards of the profession. Ensuring transparency of all court procedures, on the one hand, will encourage participants of the trial (judges, prosecutors, advocates) to perform their duties in a more responsible and conscientious way and, on the other, will make the judges more diligent in observing procedural law. “Legal profession plays a fundamental role in the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms. Our cooperation with the project "Open Court" is important on the way to the introduction of the European standards of fair justice in Ukraine”- said Ganna Kolesnyk. Monitoring of the courts of Ukraine demonstrates that the work done is effective and brings about effective results concerning the improvement of dialogue between judges, prosecutors, investigators and advocates for the sake of respect for the adversarial criminal proceedings, equality of arms and equal application of the law. Today, the project has significantly influenced the increase of professional ethics and conduct of judges, prosecutors and other law-enforcement officers for the sake of prevention of human rights violations in criminal proceedings. For information: The project "Open Court" was created within the NGO "Open Ukraine" and aims to bring law enforcement in line with the highest national and international standards of criminal procedure. On 23 September 2015 the UNBA and the NGO "Open Ukraine" signed an agreement on cooperation in the framework of the project "Open Court". |
