In the United States, the plaintiff hired a lawyer. But the judges did not like it |

![]() A New Yorker found himself in a difficult situation after using an AI-generated avatar to present his case in court. The judges were outraged because they quickly realized that the «advocate» was not a real person. The incident, which occurred on March 26, was reported by Fox News. Jerome Dewald, a plaintiff in a labor dispute, appeared before the New York State Supreme Court. He provided a video for viewing at the hearing. An attractive young man in a shirt appeared on the screen, seemingly in his home office. «With the court's permission, I appear here today as a humble plaintiff without a lawyer before a panel of five distinguished judges», - he said. However, Manzanet-Daniels, one of the judges on the panel, stopped the video and questioned the authenticity of the person speaking. «Wait a minute, - she said. - Is this the advocate in this case?». Dewald confirmed that this person was his representative and explained: «I generated this. This is not a real person». The judge then expressed her dissatisfaction with the party's actions. «It would have been nice to know this when you filed the motion, - she said. - You did not tell me about it, sir». Later, the plaintiff sent the court an apology letter explaining that he did not have a lawyer in the case and did not mean to mislead the court. Dewald asked the court to allow him to use the pre-recorded video. He had originally planned to use an avatar that looked like himself, but eventually chose a different program. This incident is not the first time that artificial intelligence has raised concerns in judicial practice, journalists report. |
