Results of the visit of the UNBA representative to Glasgow (United Kingdom)

print version

At the end of April, UNBA representative in the United Kingdom Oleksandr Chernykh paid a working visit to Glasgow (Scotland, United Kingdom). This trip was an important step in strengthening international legal cooperation and developing mechanisms to support Ukrainian advocates during the war.

During the visit, a series of meetings were held with representatives of leading legal, scientific, and public institutions in Scotland.

Among the key results was an agreement to continue a series of online lectures on British law for Ukrainian advocates, teachers, and students. This format allows the Ukrainian legal community to stay abreast of current legal standards in the UK, improve their professional skills, and strengthen their international expertise.

As part of further cooperation, thematic round tables and seminars are also planned on the following topics:

  • the role of the legal profession in a democracy;
  • international legal instruments for the protection of the rights of displaced persons;
  • the specific features of the activities of notarial bodies in Scotland;
  • the exchange of experience in the areas of legal ethics, human rights, and digital transformations in the legal profession.

These events should serve as a platform for open dialogue between Ukrainian and British colleagues and facilitate adaptation to the new challenges faced by lawyers in times of crisis.

A particularly important event of the visit was a meeting with the head of the Scottish Refugee Council, Dr. Sabir Zaza.

During the conversation, they discussed current issues related to the legal situation of Ukrainians in the UK, including access to legal aid, asylum, and temporary protection. The parties expressed their mutual readiness for deeper cooperation between the civil society and government agencies to ensure the basic rights and needs of people forced to leave Ukraine because of the war.

During the trip, advocate O. Chernykh held a series of substantive meetings with influential representatives of the Scottish legal community, including:

  • Chief Executive of The Law Society of Scotland — Diane McGiffen,
  • President of The Law Society of Scotland — Susan Murray,
  • Former President of The Law Society of Scotland — Sheila Webster,
  • Retired Judge of the European Court of Human Rights, Honorary Professor, Knight of the Order of the British Empire — Sir David Edward OBE WS,
  • Director of Legal Policy at The Law Society of Scotland — Michel Clancy OBE WS,
  • Advocates — Gordon Lennox WS, Darren Toombs, Yvonne Evans, and Joshua King.

The Ukrainian National Bar Association expresses its sincere gratitude to its British colleagues for their openness, professional solidarity, and steps towards cooperation.

At a time when Ukraine is fighting for freedom and justice, every international contact built on shared values contributes to strengthening human rights and supporting the global rule of law.
