print version

A new edition has been published in the UNBA publishing series «Advocate Biographies»: «Advocate Antin Gorbachevsky and his era». The book is dedicated to the Ukrainian advocate, public, state, and political figure, publisher, diplomat and patron.

The publication is written in the format of a popular science biographical essay and is intended for advocates, legal professionals, historians, local historians, and anyone interested in the history of advocacy and Ukraine. The author is Oleksandr Stepanenko, human rights activist, chairman of the public organization «Helsinki Initiative-XXI» and member of the board of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union.

It should be noted that the Scientific and methodological center for research on advocacy and law, which implements the tasks of researching and popularizing the historical heritage of advocacy within the UNBA system, launched the series «Advocate Biographies» in 2016. To date, the series has published monographs on prominent advocates: Stepan Baran, Volodymyr Zagaikevych, Volodymyr Bemko, Mykhailo Zakhidny and Stepan Fedak.

The new edition is the fifth volume in the series and focuses on Antin Gorbachevsky (1856–1944), whose many years of legal practice are presented as an example of service to justice, human dignity, truth, and the law.

The book is structured as a retrospective narrative and consists of seventeen chapters: from his childhood and youth in Podillia and his studies in Lviv to his participation in the political processes of Austria-Hungary, the development of the Western Ukrainian People's Republic, and his legal and diplomatic activities in exile.

«Oleksandr Stepanenko showed how Horbachevsky's biography reflects the drama of Ukrainian history at the end of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries: the attainment and loss of statehood, the legal struggle to preserve Ukrainian identity in the Polish state, and forced emigration. Among the highlights of the publication are the lawyer's ethical position, his reflections on the rule of law and the role of an advocate in times of political instability, as well as his work on the development of Ukrainian legal institutions and legal language, - commented the head of the Center Iryna Vasylyk. - The appeal to the figure of Antin Horbachevsky is particularly relevant at a time when advocacy in Ukraine is defending its independence and the country is undergoing the trials of war».

In May 2021, during the opening of the Chortkiv Advocacy Museum, a memorial plaque in honor of Antin Gorbachevsky was installed on the wall of the former District Court building.
