The peculiarities of legal education in the United States were discussed at the webinar |
|
![]() In the United States, the approach to education is very flexible. Students can choose their own disciplines and the number of courses they will take and in which semester. In Ukraine, however, this process is more formalized. Representatives of the Ukrainian National Bar Association Olena Kalashnyk and Yulia Kasprova spoke about the peculiarities of American legal education during the thematic webinar. In the United States, law schools (educational programs) are accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA). The program must meet strict standards for the quality of teaching, faculty, and learning resources. Graduates of ABA-accredited schools are eligible to sit for the Bar Exam in most states. For comparison, in Ukraine, this function is performed not by the UNBA, but by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. In addition, in the US, the duration of study is longer than in Ukraine. In Ukraine, law students usually complete their bachelor's degree and then a master's degree. Law school in the United States is a three-year program for higher education, preceded by a bachelor's degree in any field. Thus, the American model is longer. Therefore, in the United States, attorneys may have additional education other than law. Another difference is the procedure for obtaining a lawyer's license. Unlike in Ukraine, where a lawyer can practice throughout the country, in the United States, each state has its own rules for passing the bar exam and requires a lawyer's license. Students are prepared for the bar exam while studying at law school. Galyna Papazova, a representative of the UNBA in the Republic of Ghana, also spoke at the event. She spoke about access to the profession in this country. Applicants who have received a bachelor's degree and completed the basic program of general law, passed the exam, have an IELTS certificate and have undergone the procedures for the recognition of educational documents can enter the Ghana School of Law. Non-residents of the Republic of Ghana may be considered for admission to the Ghana School of Law if they are qualified and licensed to practice law in countries with a legal system reasonably similar to that of Ghana and have a reciprocal agreement with Ghana. Students in Ghana independently choose a program of study depending on whether they intend to practice in court or only draft legal and procedural documents (solicitors and barristers). After graduation and passing the exam, graduates become members of the Ghana Bar Association. Obtaining the right to practice law is possible after obtaining a license - General legal counsel. This procedure is more of an interview, i.e. the qualification level is not checked. |
