Advocate Irena Maria Ostrozka-Sangushko has been appointed as the representative of the Ukrainian National Bar Association in the Arab Republic of Egypt, in the city of Cairo. The corresponding Order No. 80, dated March 10, 2026, was signed by the President of the UNBA, BCU Lidiya Izovitova.

Irena Maria Ostrozka-Sangushko has 10 years of experience as a lawyer, is a managing partner of a law firm, and a lecturer at the Higher School of Advocacy. In her professional practice, she specializes, in particular, in international arbitration, extradition proceedings, criminal law, human rights protection, and international commercial and maritime law.

The advocate has repeatedly defended Ukrainians and foreigners in the courts of Hurghada, represented the interests of Ukrainians before government agencies in Cairo, and continues to provide legal assistance to Ukrainians in Egypt.

«I already have experience providing legal assistance to Ukrainians in Egypt and see a need for further development of this work. As the UNBA representative in Cairo, I would like to contribute to the protection of Ukrainians’ rights, the establishment of professional communication with the Egyptian legal community, and the expansion of the Ukrainian advocacy profession’s international ties. I view this as an opportunity to strengthen the international presence of the Ukrainian advocacy profession in the Arab region», - noted the UNBA representative.

As a reminder, according to the Regulations on the Representation of the Ukrainian National Bar Association Abroad, approved by the decision of the BCU on September 2, 2022, No. 59, BCU representatives abroad:

  • represent the interests of the UNBA in a specific country in relations with representatives of foreign bar associations, representatives of foreign government agencies, enterprises, institutions, organizations, and scientific institutions, as well as with individuals and legal entities;
  • cooperate with foreign diplomatic missions in the host country;
  • establish contacts with the UNBA’s foreign partners, maintain and develop ties with international organizations;
  • organize and conduct lectures, seminars, training sessions, conferences, and other informational and educational events;
  • work to secure grants and funds from foreign charitable foundations (organizations).

The activities of UNBA representatives abroad are funded at their own expense, through contributions from sponsors (individuals and legal entities) and charitable foundations (organizations), and are based on the principle of self-financing. The UNBA does not fund or cover the expenses of its representatives.

Reform without data and advocacy: what the Ministry of Justice’s launch has revealed

The Ministry of Justice hosted the first meeting of the working group on bar reform. But instead of professional preparation of legislative changes, we saw exactly what Armada Network Director Dale Armstrong had spoken about the day before in Kyiv: not reform, but a struggle for control over the agenda through a narrow circle of “stakeholders” who create an echo chamber of influence for themselves.
