CONSULTANT LEGAL RESEARCHER: UKRAINE
 
The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) is a worldwide network of judges and lawyers united in affirming international law and rule of law principles that advance human rights.
 
The ICJ is seeking a legal consultant to support its work on lawyers’ independence, security and capacity to protect human rights and the rule of law in Ukraine.  
 
Responsibilities

For a period of ten months, the consultant will research and monitor the situation in Ukraine regarding the independence and protection of lawyers; develop and maintain contacts with individual lawyers, associations of lawyers, NGOs and IGOs as well as other relevant actors in the country, and identify and research cases suitable for ICJ intervention. The researcher will draft legal briefs, reports and statements; organise trial observations; and provide support for visits of ICJ representatives to Ukraine.
 
Qualifications

Education and experience

• University degree in law; further academic studies in international human rights law desirable;

• Experience of research and advocacy on international human rights and rule of law, including in Ukraine.  
 
Essential skills

• Excellent knowledge and understanding of the legal system and political situation in Ukraine;

• Knowledge of international human rights law, standards and mechanisms including standards and mechanisms of the Council of Europe;

• Strong analytical skills; 

• Fluency in English, Ukrainian and Russian;

• Demonstrated commitment to human rights and the rule of law.
