SUTE students were briefed on the first steps in advocacy
The Ukrainian National Bar Association hosted a meeting with students from the Faculty of international trade and law at the State University of Trade and Economics.
The students spoke with Igor Andreyev, chairman of the UNBA NextGen, and Viktor Vovnyuk, head of the Secretariat of the High Qualification and Disciplinary Bar Commission.
The speakers discussed the system of bar self-governing bodies, their functions, and their role in ensuring the independence of the legal profession. They also addressed becoming an advocate, professional training, internship requirements, passing the bar exam, and the specifics of legal practice.
The future advocates were interested in how the profession works from the inside: from the first steps in practice to legal ethics and disciplinary responsibility. The students also discussed the differences between the roles of an advocate, a prosecutor, and a judge in the justice system, the functions they perform, and how these powers are defined by the Constitution.
The greatest interest was sparked by practical questions related to real-life situations in professional practice.
Representatives of the UNBA shared their own experiences and advice for those just beginning their journey in the legal profession. The discussion focused on knowledge, reputation, responsibility, and a willingness to continuously learn — that is, on the elements without which formal access to the profession does not yet make a lawyer a true advocate.
«It is important to us that students view advocacy as a dynamic field with high standards for knowledge, ethics, and responsibility, - commented I. Andreyev on the event’s outcomes. - Such meetings help future advocates better understand where an advocate’s path begins, what decisions they will have to make in the profession, and why a reputation is formed long before receiving a license. We want young advocates to enter the profession with greater awareness — understanding its opportunities, limitations and values».
