Ukrainian Bar shapes world standards of human rights protection, - MP Vatras
Ukraine's leadership in the preparation of the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer confirms the high level of development of the legal culture of our country, understanding of the key role of the Bar in promoting human rights and democracy.
This is how Volodymyr Vatras, Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Organization and Activities of the Bar and Legal Aid Bodies of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Legal Policy, commented on the adoption of the Convention by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.
He called this document a «historic achievement» that creates a fundamentally new and effective international instrument for the protection of human rights, with clear mechanisms for monitoring and application.
The MP is convinced that Ukraine should not only sign the Convention, thus demonstrating its legal maturity and commitment to the constitutional principles of the rule of law, but also ratify it and make it part of the national legislation.
V. Vatras promised to make every effort within my powers to ensure that this process is carried out quickly and efficiently. He also expressed hope for support from his colleagues in the parliamentary committee, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice.
He also noted the significant contribution of the Ukrainian bar to the preparation of the Convention on the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer. «We are proud that the representative of Ukraine, Honored Lawyer of Ukraine, attorney, Valentyn Gvozdiy, the Vice President of the Ukrainian National Bar Association, the Bar Council of Ukraine, was not only one of the 15 experts who drafted the text of the Convention, but also served as Vice President of the Committee of Experts throughout the entire period of preparation of the document, - said the Chairman of the relevant subcommittee of the Verkhovna Rada. - Ukraine's leadership in this important international process once again confirms the high level of development of the legal culture of our country, understanding of the key role of the bar in promoting human rights and democracy».
«As a lawyer, I am proud that our profession and the Ukrainian Bar are at the forefront of global human rights trends», - the MP summarized.
As a reminder, on March 12, the Council of Europe adopted the Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer at its 1522nd meeting. The Ukrainian National Bar Association immediately translated this document into Ukrainian and stated that Ukraine should be one of the first to ratify the Convention.
